Projection: need to automatically qualify

The need for Boston University to secure the Patriot League automatic bid follows from a resume with some eye-opening victories and too many damaging defeats. A gritty road win at Northeastern and a narrow neutral-site victory over Harvard show the team can win away from home and in tight spots. Those highs are undercut by a lopsided setback at Northwestern, difficult road losses at Penn State, Northern Kentucky and Columbia, and home blemishes against Maine and Merrimack that revealed defensive vulnerabilities and an inability to close against better opposition. A challenging remaining slate that features a road trip to Colgate and important matchups against Bucknell, Holy Cross, Loyola Maryland, Navy and Army gives Boston University real chances to rebuild its case but until the nonconference damage is erased the clearest path to the NCAA field is by claiming the league’s automatic berth.
