Projection: need to automatically qualify

SC Upstate looks like a team that must win its conference tournament to reach the bracket because its résumé mixes a few encouraging flashes with too many harmful setbacks. A true road victory at Fresno State and a solid win over NC Central prove the squad can deliver, but losses at Cal Baptist, UNC Wilmington and West Georgia along with a disappointing home defeat to Tennessee Tech weaken any at-large case. The nonconference visits to Nebraska and to North Carolina are brutal chances to earn a signature result but more realistically serve as measuring sticks, and the remainder of the Big South slate offers both winnable home dates and key road tests at Charleston Southern, Longwood and Winthrop that will decide whether the committee sees enough quality wins to avoid the automatic route.
