Projection: need to automatically qualify

Cal Baptist’s projection to need the automatic berth tracks with how the résumé reads: the signature moment is a road win at Oregon State and a neutral-site victory over San Diego, but those bright spots are offset by damaging results away at Colorado and Utah and a neutral loss to BYU that undercuts any at-large argument. The defense has shown it can be competent on the road, yet the offense has stalled in ugly road setbacks at Utah Valley and UT Arlington and in a narrow defeat at Tarleton State, so the committee will want to see more convincing road or neutral wins against respectable opponents. With most of the nonconference ledger built against lower-tier schools, Cal Baptist’s remaining slate against familiar Western Athletic foes such as Utah Valley, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, Southern Utah and Utah Tech represents the only clear opportunity to add the kind of resume-changing victories that would avoid the need to secure the conference’s automatic spot.
