Projection: need to automatically qualify

Tarleton State's resume leaves little margin for error and points toward the automatic bid as the cleanest path to the NCAA field. The nonconference portion features ugly road outings at SMU, LSU, Baylor and Cincinnati that are hard to overcome, while the program’s best moments — a road victory at Rice, a road win at UT Arlington and solid home results against Texas A&M–Corpus Christi, Merrimack and Cal Baptist — amount to respectable but not signature résumé pieces. A narrow defeat at Southern Utah and competitive showings at Utah Tech and Utah Valley demonstrate the team can compete, yet inconsistent results away from its own floor blunt the committee narrative. With key conference road tests and rematches remaining at Utah Valley, Cal Baptist, Southern Utah and Abilene Christian those games are the opportunity to erase early blemishes and deliver the road or neutral-site wins that create an at-large case, so until Tarleton seizes those chances the projection that the automatic qualifier route is their most realistic avenue makes sense.
