Coastal Car needs an automatic bid because its résumé is full of flashes but missing a true marquee win to outweigh several damaging losses; the resume includes road wins at Old Dominion, St. Joseph's and Marshall and a win at Winthrop plus a neutral victory over North Dakota, yet those highlights are undercut by a blowout at Illinois State and ugly road defeats at Grand Canyon and South Alabama and by conference setbacks to Georgia Southern, Georgia State and Arkansas State that a selection committee will mark against it. The nonconference slate never produced a scalp that would neutralize those blemishes, and while home dates with James Madison and Marshall and road trips to Georgia State and James Madison are clear chances to improve the profile, the safest path to the NCAA field for Coastal Car is to secure the automatic qualifier that comes with winning the conference tournament.
