Projection: need to automatically qualify
UMBC’s profile is built around a few gritty wins and several damaging losses that together leave the resume thin on a marquee victory. The Retrievers have shown they can grind out results with a road win at Bucknell and a tight nonconference victory at Morgan State and they picked up home wins over Wagner and Delaware State, but those positives are offset by lopsided setbacks at George Washington and at South Florida and by disappointing losses at home to Buffalo and Army that erode any at-large argument. The conference slate still presents a string of winnable home dates and a handful of true road tests at Vermont and Bryant where strong showings would supply the quality wins missing from the early schedule, so UMBC’s standing will hinge on how it handles those tougher road environments and whether it can convert its remaining comfortable homes into resume-changing results.
