Projection: need to automatically qualify

UMBC's ticket to the dance is looking like one of those "win your conference or bust" situations. There's a lack of high-quality wins to prop up their case; dropping close games to middling opponents doesn't help. Keeping the contest tight against Vermont shows they can hang with stronger squads, but the loss column is where impressions are made, and that's been bloated with defeats from teams like Marist and Coppin State, which aren't exactly resume builders. If UMBC wants to punch their ticket, they'll need to make some serious noise in the America East tournament. Their tendency to score in bunches proves they can light up the scoreboard, but if they can't tighten up a defense that's been more generous than holiday season, it's going to be an uphill battle to cut down any nets this March.
