Projected seed: 16 (automatic qualifier, play-in game) (automatic qualifier)
UMBC’s résumé reads like a club that has cleaned up inside a modest league but offered almost no convincing work against quality nonconference opposition; its brightest moments are home wins over conference contenders such as Vermont and a steady run of league road victories, while its ugliest results arrived on the road at Dayton, George Washington, Georgetown and South Florida, games that exposed struggles away from home. Nonconference wins over Wagner, Morgan State and Coppin State do little to erase a damaging home loss to Buffalo or the lopsided defeat at George Washington, so until the Retrievers produce a neutral or true road signature or secure the automatic berth that comes with winning the conference tournament their profile will be seen as built on conference success rather than the kind of quality wins that earn an at-large nod.
