Projection: need to automatically qualify

Alabama State’s resume leaves little room for an at-large argument because its nonconference season produced a single road scalp and a neutral-site win while being punctuated by heavy defeats at blue-blood and power-conference opponents such as Florida State, Colorado, Cincinnati, Memphis and Mississippi State and by tough losses at New Mexico and Missouri that erase the value of those wins. Conference play has been uneven with damaging setbacks to Jackson State and Alabama A&M and only modest victories against lesser Southwestern AC opponents that a committee will view as unimpressive, and their performance away from home has been a liability rather than an asset. The remaining slate gives them chances to pile up conference wins at home and a couple of road tests at Prairie View and Southern, but none offers the kind of marquee road or neutral victory that would flip their standing. With top-quality wins scarce, bad losses standing out, and upcoming games unlikely to change the narrative, their clean path to the NCAA tournament runs through the conference’s automatic bid.
