Projection: need to automatically qualify

Southern’s season reads like a resume that needs the conference’s automatic bid because the nonconference window produced a string of damaging road defeats at power-conference opponents such as Arkansas, Marquette, Texas, Baylor and Illinois while offering no signature neutral-site victory to offset those losses. The team’s brightest moments are gritty conference road wins at under-the-radar league rivals and home victories over fellow Southwestern AC programs, and a few tight road wins show the group can grind out results away from home, but those wins do not carry the same weight as success against high-major opponents. With the final stretch made up of winnable league dates at home and on the road against familiar conference foes, Southern can polish its record yet still enter the bracket conversation only by erasing the damage of those lop-sided losses or by capturing the league’s automatic berth.
