Southern's profile makes it clear that the only secure path back to the NCAA field runs through the conference automatic qualifier because its résumé is built on narrow road wins over conference rivals and comfortable victories over lesser opponents while its at-large case was crippled by heavy defeats at major programs such as Arkansas, Marquette, Texas, Baylor and Illinois. The competitive outing at Washington was a rare positive on the road but it does not erase the lopsided losses at power-conference venues.
