Projection: need to automatically qualify

William & Mary’s resume shows why the projection points to the conference title as their most realistic route to the NCAA field. The Tribe have flashed upside with neutral-site wins over UTEP and Abilene Christian, a road victory at Duquesne, and solid home wins over Old Dominion, Hofstra and UNC Wilmington, but those positives are blunted by a blowout at St John’s, the road loss at George Washington and a string of conference defeats away at College of Charleston, Monmouth, Drexel and Campbell that damage the perception of the resume. The committee puts extra weight on wins away from home and at neutral sites and William & Mary has not amassed enough of them against quality opponents, so the remaining stretch of road games at UNC Wilmington, Hampton and Northeastern and the late matchups with Elon and Campbell represent the last opportunities to add the sorts of resume-building results that could avoid the do-or-die path of winning the Coastal tournament.
