Projection: need to automatically qualify

Richmond’s standing makes sense because its ledger mixes genuine high-end moments away from home and at neutral sites with enough damaging losses that the only clean path to the field runs through a strong finish in the final stretch. Road wins at Belmont and at St. Bonaventure and a neutral-site victory over Charlotte give the committee the sort of road and neutral success it rewards, and a one-point neutral loss to Furman is forgivable, but that is offset by a heavy defeat at St. Louis, a lopsided home loss to Davidson and a string of conference setbacks that raise questions about consistency. The remaining slate — an immediate return trip to Davidson, a home date with St. Bonaventure, a neutral trip to Loyola-Chicago and late games against Dayton and Duquesne — gives Richmond clear opportunities to erase the bad losses and cement its resume by protecting home court and winning on the road.
