Projection: need to automatically qualify

VMI’s resume leaves no plausible path into the NCAA field short of winning the Southern Conference tournament. A gritty road victory at Southern Indiana and home wins over Loyola Maryland and Chattanooga are modest bright spots, but they are dwarfed by a blowout at Missouri, heavy losses at Richmond and UCF and ugly neutral-site setbacks against Buffalo and Bowling Green. With almost no quality success away from home and a string of damaging conference defeats, the remaining games at Wofford, Western Carolina, Samford and another trip to Chattanooga are chances to improve the profile but none offer the kind of signature win that would offset the season’s body of work, so the league title is the only reliable route back to the field.
