Projection: need to automatically qualify

VMI’s path to the NCAA tournament runs through the Southern Conference because the nonconference résumé offers almost no marquee victories and is scarred by heavy losses away and at neutral sites. The road win at Southern Indiana and home victories over Loyola MD and Chattanooga stand out as bright spots, but they are overwhelmed by blowouts at Missouri, Richmond and UCF and neutral-site setbacks to Buffalo and Bowling Green along with ugly road results at Stetson, Radford and Furman. Several conference games remain, including trips to Western Carolina, Citadel, Mercer and UNC Greensboro plus home dates with Wofford, ETSU and Furman and road tests at Samford and Chattanooga, so there are chances to claw back respect, yet none of those remaining items carries the kind of résumé-changing cachet to earn an at-large bid unless VMI secures the Southern Conference’s automatic spot.
