Projection: need to automatically qualify
VMI’s résumé is built around a couple bright spots and a string of damaging setbacks, and that balance explains its current standing. The road victory at Southern Indiana and the comfortable home win over Loyola Maryland are the program’s best moments, but they are dwarfed by blowout losses at Missouri and UCF and ugly neutral-site defeats to Buffalo and Bowling Green that underline its struggles against higher-tier opponents and away from Cameron Hall. A handful of competitive games such as the close tests at Radford and at Jacksonville show the team can compete in spots but remain losses on the ledger rather than resume builders. The remaining Southern Conference slate, with challenging road trips to ETSU and Furman and winnable home dates with Citadel, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina, represents the only clear path to improve the profile and set up a conference tournament run where the automatic berth is the most realistic route into the field. Until those opportunities play out VMI reads like a team with flashes but not yet the quality road and neutral wins a selection committee typically demands.
