Projection: likely out

Butler’s resume feels like a team of high upside but damaging inconsistency; marquee neutral-site wins over Virginia and South Carolina show it can beat quality opponents away from Hinkle Field House, yet an ugly home defeat to Connecticut and batterings on the road at Villanova and at Marquette create the kind of bad losses that selection committees notice. Many of the nonconference victories came against low-end programs and do little to offset those shortfalls, and while road wins at Seton Hall and at DePaul demonstrate the group can win away, intermittent losses at Creighton and to St John’s at home erode that argument. The late neutral-site loss to Providence leaves little in the way of a new signature resume enhancer, so unless Butler can produce a resume-changing win over one of the league’s top names on a true road or neutral floor, the profile will remain defined more by worrisome setbacks than by the handful of eye-catching successes.
