Projection: need to automatically qualify

Needing the Missouri Valley automatic bid is a logical reading of Indiana State’s resume because the profile contains a statement home win over Belmont and a gutsy road victory at Milwaukee yet is offset by a lopsided trip to Duke, a neutral loss to Alcorn State and a series of harmful league setbacks at the likes of Northern Iowa and Belmont. A string of razor-close defeats at Drake, Murray State and Valparaiso shows the Sycamores can compete in their league but those tight losses do not replace the lack of signature road and neutral wins and the poor nonconference results leave virtually no margin for error. With a road test at Southern Illinois and a home date with Illinois Chicago remaining, those games are the final opportunities to alter the picture and otherwise the most reliable path to the field is coming through the conference tournament.
