Projection: need to automatically qualify

The projection that Evansville will need to secure the conference’s automatic berth tracks with what their rĆ©sumĆ© actually shows: the neutral-court upset of Oregon State and home wins over Ball State and Valparaiso are genuine highlights and a tight road victory at Indiana State gives a glimpse of resilience, but those positives are overwhelmed by lopsided setbacks at Purdue, at Notre Dame and at neutral Akron along with a string of damaging road losses at the likes of Belmont and Northern Iowa and a couple of ugly home defeats to Illinois Chicago. Committee voters reward road and neutral success against respected opponents and punish bad losses, and Evansville’s few quality moments have been swamped by results that look worse by venue, so their most reliable path to the NCAA field is to win the Missouri Valley tournament.
