Projection: likely out

Southern Illinois has shown it can win in the places that matter with a road victory at Belmont and a neutral-site triumph over Delaware and those results are the reason it remains under consideration, but the resume is dragged down by a heavy loss at Memphis, an ugly home defeat to Belmont and a string of conference setbacks at Richmond, Murray State and Illinois State that expose inconsistency away from home. The best moments prove the ceiling here because they came on the road and at neutral sites against respectable opponents, while the worst moments are the kind of damaging losses selection committees remember. With little margin for error the only realistic way back toward contention is to pile up more road and neutral wins late in the season, which is why the current outlook leans the way it does.
