Projection: need to automatically qualify

South Alabama's résumé reads like a team that can win on the road and in neutral settings but has piled up enough damaging results that its safest path to the bracket runs through the conference. Road victories at Toledo, Jacksonville State, Southern Miss and James Madison along with a neutral-site win over New Mexico State show it can beat quality opponents away from home and that its signature moments are real. Those bright spots are offset by a brutal showing at ETSU, multiple setbacks to Texas State and Troy and late losses to Southern Miss and Georgia Southern, plus close defeats at UAB and to North Texas that leave ugly holes on the resume. With those mixed signals, the team needs a string of resume-building road or neutral wins in Sun Belt play and a deep run in the conference tournament to erase the bad losses and change how the committee sees the profile.
