Old Dominion projects to need an automatic bid because its résumé lacks a marquee victory while several road setbacks against established programs have done clear damage; nonconference trips to Villanova and Xavier produced poor results and an earlier loss at George Washington left the best wins clustered against low-major foes like Norfolk State and Morgan State with a lone gritty road victory at Coastal Carolina. Conference play has been uneven and away losses at William & Mary, Richmond and George Mason undermine any claim to consistent performance away from home.
