Old Dominion is effectively chasing an automatic berth because its résumé is marred by heavy defeats in hostile environments at Xavier, Villanova, George Washington and Maryland that outweigh a collection of modest wins such as Norfolk State and James Madison and a few true road victories at Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Arkansas State; those respectable conference results prove the team can win away from home but they lack a marquee neutral-site signature and are undermined by the lopsided losses at major venues, so the remaining regular-season games against Louisiana, Southern Miss, Marshall and Georgia State are the last realistic chances to build momentum and alter perception before the Sun Belt tournament where winning the conference crown is the clearest path to the NCAA field.
