Projection: need to automatically qualify

Stonehill’s projection to need an automatic qualifier makes sense because its résumé is thin on quality road and neutral wins and scarred by lopsided losses to power-conference opponents; they were overwhelmed on the road at Iowa State and Syracuse and struggled in other true road tests at DePaul and Rhode Island. The team’s brightest moments are gritty wins away at Wagner and at Le Moyne and an emphatic home victory over St Francis PA along with a nonconference home win over Chicago State, but those results come against lesser opposition and do little to erase the damage from blowouts and bad road losses. Add in a string of narrow defeats to conference peers, including tight away setbacks at St Francis PA and LIU Brooklyn, and the picture that emerges is one of inconsistency away from home and few signature victories. Given that mix of quality wins, damaging defeats and lack of resume-building road success, the realistic path to the NCAA tournament runs through winning the Northeast Conference tournament.
