Projection: likely out
St. John’s résumé is defined by a handful of eye-catching moments and a handful of worrying ones, which explains its current standing. The neutral-site victory over Baylor and the razor-thin neutral loss to Iowa State show this team can compete with the best, while comfortable nonconference wins over Quinnipiac, William & Mary and Bucknell demonstrate it can close out weaker opposition. At the same time, road-resume questions remain after nonconference setbacks to Alabama and Auburn and the absence of a signature road win in league play. The Big East slate still gives meaningful chances to change perception, with looming tests at Creighton, Xavier and Villanova and high-profile home dates against Kentucky and Connecticut that could turn narrow losses into resume-makers or deepen the damage of poor results. Selection committees will focus on those neutral and true road outcomes first, so how St. John’s performs in those games will ultimately decide whether the résumé looks like a bubble saver or a team still trying to prove its consistency.
