Western Michigan looks like a team that will have to win the MAC tournament to reach the field because its resume features a few solid moments, such as home success over Central Michigan and a road victory at Eastern Michigan, but it lacks any marquee road or neutral triumphs that a committee rewards. The season is littered with damaging losses away from home, most notably heavy defeats at Ohio State, Iowa, Valparaiso and Akron, and those results outweigh respectable home wins and a nice road result at SIUE. The remaining slate, which includes a home date with Akron, road trips to Central Michigan and Bowling Green and finishers against Miami Ohio, Ball State and Kent, gives the Broncos opportunities to add an eye-catching road victory or at least avoid any more resume-smothering losses. In that context the cleanest, most realistic path into the tournament is by securing the conference’s automatic berth.
